Courage at Work: How to Inspire Courageous Behavior in the Workplace

Courage is the first virtue…because it makes all the other virtues possible. If that’s true, than courage is the first business virtue too. Why? Because it makes so many other business concepts possible. Leadership, for example, takes bold action and decisive judgment. It takes courage. Innovation takes creating ground-breaking, but tradition-defying, ideas. It takes courage. Sales takes knocking on the door in the face of rejection. It takes courage. In fact, courage is so important to these concepts that they don’t exist in the absence of courage. Yet, despite the fundamental importance of courage to business success, there have been no training programs dedicated solely on building workforce courage.

This session will focus on helping you inspire more courageous behavior in yourself and in your co-workers.

Learning Objectives:

  • Why fear and comfort are bad for business.
  • How to create an environment that supports courageous behavior.
  • The “Three Buckets of Courage” and how to differentiate among them.
  • The differences between managers who encourage workers, and those who discourage them (Fillers and Spillers).
  • Tips on how to be more courageous yourself, and how to inspire more courageous behavior among your co-workers and employees.

Bill Treasurer is the author of the new book Courage Goes to Work, and the chief encouragement officer of Giant Leap Consulting, the world’s first courage-building company (www.giantleapconsulting.com). Bill’s insights about courage and smart risk-taking have been shared with thousands of executives from organizations such as Accenture, SPANX, the Center for Disease Control, NASA, IBM, ComEd, the National Science Foundation, the Drug Enforcement Administration, and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Prior to founding Giant Leap, Bill spent 6 years as a change management executive with Accenture, where he eventually became the company’s first fulltime internal executive coach. As chronicled in his first book, Right Risk, Bill is a former captain of the U.S. High Diving Team. He performed over 1500 high dives from heights that scaled to over 100 feet – the equivalent of a 10-story building! To learn more about Bill and his new book, go to: www.couragegoestowork.com
