Spiral Up: The Management Secrets Behind Wildly Successful Initiatives

When a plucky, ambitious engineer from a major petroleum company was handed a sobering document that detailed the company’s plans to shut down a lackluster refinery in Lima, Ohio, the safest bet would have been to go along with the consensus. Instead, Jim Schaefer saw the possibility for a radically different outcome, and in the face of formidable obstacles—gloomy numbers, complex marketplace realities, cynical union workers, troublesome maintenance problems, stingy management policies, clandestine deal-making—Schaefer and 20 other heroes guided the plant to unprecedented profitability. It is now a key refinery of Husky Energy, and the pride and joy of Lima.
This is just one of the inspiring, eye-opening case studies we’ll use to highlight the surprising management principles behind wildly successful initiatives. We’ll discuss how these open-ended, unpredictable, and unstoppable initiatives turn routine management formulas upside down.
