Leadership…In the Eye of the Storm!

In the late 1990’s, it seemed the entire business community was talking about the McKinsey study on the “War for Talent.” CEO’s made pronouncements of strategic intent to win on this battlefield. Vision statements were revised to emphasize acquiring and developing human capital. Companies made big promises. They couldn’t do enough for their people.

Yet, over time, as a challenging business climate has lingered, these promises turned to rhetoric, not reality in many organizations. Early signs that the “coast was clear” with dramatic economic recovery underway, gave way to continued caution as escalating energy prices, geopolitical unrest, and a war against terrorism emerged as the order of the day. Though their Annual Reports proclaimed people to be their “most important assets”, people were often treated as a cost only.

There are significant lessons to be learned from the recent economic downturn. Those companies that best weathered the storm acted on their firmly-held belief that during times of both prosperity and uncertainty, success hinges on the quality of a company’s leadership…at all levels of the organization. A business rises and falls on the strength of its leadership. Those that made an investment in this asset typically outperformed the field. The other companies allowed themselves to be diverted. They focused on trying NOT to LOSE, rather than trying to WIN. These firms have more ground to cover now.

Join us for a 90-minute audio conference as we discuss how successful companies used leadership to increase their success during challenging times.

  6. Identify why past results no longer assure future success.
