Persuading Resistant Audiences: The Key Ability to Achieve Success in Business

The late Peter Drucker, famed management guru, once wrote that “the ability to express oneself is the most important ability that a person can have in business.” True enough, but perhaps Dr. Drucker should have added the word “persuasively” to his advice. For the person striving for success in business must master the art of persuading others to do what he or she wants done. This does not mean by deception , trickery or a “hard sell.”

It does mean persuading a client or customer to “buy” what you are selling because that product or service is perceived as having greater value than the money it will cost. It can mean persuading the boss that the project you are pushing is in the best interest of the company. It can mean the ability of a manager to convince people to put in the extra effort needed for a company’s success.

This audio conference will outline a repeatable methodology to show how to plan, practice and present to an audience that is at least initially skeptical. It will be taught by a speech coach who has faced hundreds of such audiences, some even outright hostile. It is a system he has taught to thousands of government and corporate executives.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Identify the strategic “knows” and tactical “implementers” of persuasive presentations
  • Recognize the importance of a “bottom line up front” approach
  • Restate the benefits of a “Murder Board” practice session, allowing the presenter to make his/her mistakes when they don’t count and be able to anticipate questions and objections so accurate responses can be developed
  • Determine the benefits accruing from a “post-presentation analysis”

Tracy Presentation Skills

President Ronald Reagan described Larry Tracy as “An extraordinarily effective speaker.” He was an Army colonel assigned to the State Department at the time, debating controversial foreign policy issues throughout the country before demanding and frequently hostile audiences. He is now cited as one of the top presentation skills trainers/coaches in the country. He formerly served as Chief of the Defense Intelligence Agency’s Presentations Branch, the Pentagon’s top briefing team, responsible for daily intelligence presentations to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the Secretary of Defense and other Defense Department officials.

He was on the cover of the July 2005 issue of Douglas Publications’ American Speaker magazine, the leading publication on public speaking in the country. His speech “Taming Hostile Audiences” was the centerpiece of the magazine, described by editor Aram Baskian, Jr. as “an outstanding speech…teaching a number of invaluable lessons in how to give a winning performance, even to the most hostile of audiences.” The speech had originally been delivered in January 2005 to the Washington, D.C Chapter of the National Speakers Association, and was subsequently published in the March 1, 2005 Vital Speeches of the Day, along with speeches by President Bush and then-Federal Reserve Chairman Greenspan.

Larry’s website, www.tracy-presentation.com, as of May 2006, has been in the number one position on Google for 19 consecutive months in response to the search for “Persuasive Presentations.” His book, The Shortcut to Persuasive Presentations, published by Imprint Books, Charleston, SC, and available for purchase from his website, distills the techniques he teaches in his executive workshops, including preparing companies to deliver oral presentations as part of the Government contracting process. The book is slated to be the text for the “Advanced Speaking” class at John Hopkins University in the Fall semester.
